The Hike
It started on a hike through LA's Santa Monica Mountains. Wanting to keep his phone close for photos without carrying a backpack, bulky gear, or letting it bounce around in his pocket, founder Kris Saunders tucked it into his waistband. To his surprise, it stayed secure and almost disappeared. But every time he pulled it out, it was covered in sweat. That small frustration snagged his curiosity… "There has to be a better way!" He's been pulling on that thread ever since.
The Idea
The answer wasn't found in a design studio or product lab. It was sitting in a drawer. Kris grabbed an old pair of lacrosse crew socks, cut off the foot, and slid one over his phone. Tucked into his waistband, it kept his phone secure while creating a simple barrier between his phone and sweaty clothes. It looked a little ridiculous—but it worked. That homemade "prototype" became his everyday solution for years. More importantly, it proved that sometimes the simplest ideas are the ones worth pursuing.
The Prototype
Whether he was hiking, working out, or traveling, it quietly did its job, and people noticed. Friends and complete strangers alike kept asking about it. The reaction was surprisingly consistent, "Oh, that's actually really smart." Those conversations reinforced that the problem wasn't unique and that it was time to build a real HipSock. What followed was years of sampling, testing, and refining. Multiple manufacturing partners, countless design tweaks, and real-world feedback transformed a homemade experiment into a purpose-built solution.
The Product
The finished product stayed true to the original idea: keep it super simple. The goal was never to reinvent how people carry their phones. It was to make the solution nearly disappear.
